Work-life balance has overtaken salary as the top priority for employees worldwide, marking a significant shift in workplace values for the first time in the 22-year history of Randstad’s global survey. The survey, which included 26,000 workers across 35 countries, revealed that 83 percent of employees now prioritize work-life balance over pay. This transformation is largely driven by the COVID-19 pandemic. The trend is particularly pronounced among younger workers, with 74 percent of Gen Z employees choosing balance overcompensation. For older workers, especially those nearing retirement, pay still holds slightly more importance. Flexibility in working hours and location has become increasingly crucial, with 65 percent of employees valuing flexible hours and 60 percent prioritizing flexible locations.
This shift towards flexible work arrangements reflects a broader transformation in workplace expectations, where employees seek a more balanced life. Notably, 64 percent of workers reported having control over the intensity of their work. For entrepreneurs, this global trend offers valuable insights—flexibility and the ability to integrate work with personal life are now essential for attracting and retaining top talent. Moreover, a strong sense of community in the workplace is highly valued, with 55 percent of workers stating they would leave an employer if they didn’t feel they belonged. As the workforce continues to prioritize flexibility, businesses that adapt to these changing expectations will be better positioned to succeed.
