Small-business owners continue to demonstrate creativity and resilience in the face of persistent challenges, including rising interest rates, price fluctuations, and labor shortages. A recent survey of over 1,300 respondents on the Gusto platform highlighted that while entrepreneurship has become more diverse, there are still disparities in representation. Entrepreneurs are increasingly adopting technologies like generative AI for marketing, customer service, and recruiting, with younger business owners more likely to integrate these tools. Despite financial strains, many small-business owners remain optimistic, with four out of five reporting that their businesses are performing as well as or better than expected.
The survey also revealed ongoing struggles with hiring, especially for firms with fewer than 10 employees. Entrepreneurs frequently rely on personal networks for early hires, but many report difficulty finding candidates with the right skills. Rising prices and high borrowing costs have added further pressure, with half of respondents citing price increases as a significant challenge. Nevertheless, small-business owners continue to adapt, with many offering benefits like paid time off and retirement plans to attract and retain talent. Entrepreneurs have proven their ability to weather these obstacles, drawing on their networks and innovative technologies to thrive in uncertain times.
