How Companies Are Shifting Toward Sustainability as a Core Strategy

Amid extreme weather events, rising costs, and growing stakeholder pressure in 2024, businesses are increasingly recognizing the importance of sustainability. Recent surveys from Deloitte highlight a significant shift in corporate approaches to climate change, with sustainability moving from a compliance requirement to a central business strategy. This change is largely driven by new regulations like the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive and shifting consumer preferences. Companies are feeling the financial strain of climate-related disruptions, including supply chain interruptions and higher insurance premiums, while pressure from investors, employees, and customers for action grows. Nearly 80 percent of executives reported an increased demand for climate action, a signal that the business community can no longer afford to ignore sustainability. The research shows that sustainability is no longer seen as an isolated effort. Over 70 percent of executives believe climate change will have a significant impact on corporate strategy in the coming years.

Budgets for sustainability programs are growing, with 85 percent of respondents indicating increased investments in the past year. Many organizations are now embedding sustainability into the core of their business models, seeing it as an opportunity to improve resilience, innovate, and increase operational efficiency. Governance structures are also evolving, with more than half of surveyed companies creating cross-functional environmental, social, and governance (ESG) teams to manage sustainability efforts. Companies with such governance structures are reportedly making greater progress in meeting sustainability goals. The road ahead for corporate sustainability is clear. Organizations are making foundational shifts in strategy and operations, aligning resources to meet long-term climate goals. As more businesses take this path, the opportunities for growth and innovation in a decarbonized future will expand.
