Building a Business Without Sacrificing Your Mental Well-Being

Startup life can push founders into long hours, social isolation, and neglected health. Chris Allen, founder of Osena, a zero-sugar spiked coconut water brand, learned this firsthand. His experience led him to develop five practical wellness habits that support both mental clarity and sustained business performance. One simple shift: scheduling wellness like any client meeting. Blocking 20 to 30 minutes a day for movement, whether it’s a walk or yoga, helps preserve energy and decision-making capacity. Allen also recommends the “nonnegotiable” approach, where at least one wellness action happens daily no matter the workload, a strategy entrepreneurs can implement without disrupting their calendars.

Founders should also be aware of the isolation risk that comes with the role. Allen suggests building a peer network of entrepreneurs who offer authentic support rather than fueling hustle culture. Just as importantly, investing in professional mental health support is key, especially as many entrepreneurs experience anxiety and burnout yet hesitate to seek help. Boundary-setting such as defining work hours and transitioning out of the workday protects personal time. And tools like the Pomodoro or 52/17 method can help avoid unsustainable work sprints. As Allen puts it, “The most valuable investment you can make isn't in your business directly but in the person running it: you.”
