Black Forest Labs, the Freiburg-based startup behind the Flux image models, has rapidly become one of Europe’s most highly valued AI companies. Founded just 18 months ago, the company has gained traction by building visual AI that goes beyond text-to-image generation into editing and consistency features that are usable inside real products. In a market where nearly 80% of roughly $270 billion in AI venture funding last year went to North America and Europe captured 13.6%, Black Forest Labs stands out as a major visual-AI player being built in Germany. Its models now support image generation and editing across a growing set of platforms and productivity apps, including Meta and Canva.
Co-Founder Robin Rombach said Flux Kontext was “the first model that was able to edit images and maintain character consistency,” allowing users to modify photos while preserving likeness. The company pairs open releases with commercial licensing: open-weights models are available under a non-commercial license, while enterprises pay for production licenses, with APIs offered for broader use. Co-Founder Andreas Blattmann stated, “Open source is just a very good way of extending a funnel.”
Black Forest Labs has scaled quickly, including raising a $300 million Series B at a $3.25 billion valuation co-led by AMP and Salesforce Ventures, with participation from Canva, Figma, a16z, and NVIDIA. With revenue split roughly evenly between usage-based products and enterprise licensing, the founders aim to build a sustainable business. By 2028, they envision Flux powering “purely visual agents” and reshaping how machines interpret visual information.
