Notion Co-Founder and CEO Ivan Zhao outlined his vision for productivity software in a recent interview, urging users to expect more from the tools they use every day. Zhao described Notion as an all-in-one digital workspace that consolidates notes, project management, documents, and collaboration into a single platform with modular, LEGO-style components that users can combine to meet their needs. He traced the design philosophy back to early computing ideas and said this modular approach aims to reduce fragmentation from many single-purpose applications.
Notion has also integrated artificial intelligence into its workspace, using models such as GPT-4 to assist users with writing, organizing information, and automating workflows, although Zhao noted that the technology is still developing and reliability remains a challenge.
Zhao said he sees AI not as a replacement for human work but as a set of “AI teammates” that increase productivity and support knowledge tasks. “AI can write code. Writing code is just another way of gluing together your process and workflows,” he explained when discussing how AI helps users set up their Notion workspace. He also spoke about how the industry must change software design and build products that let AI and humans work together more effectively. Zhao emphasized that users should hold developers accountable for creating tools that genuinely improve work and learning.
