Atlassian Buys DX for $1B to Enhance Developer Productivity

Atlassian has made its largest acquisition to date, purchasing developer productivity platform DX for $1 billion in cash and restricted stock. Founded in 2020 by Abi Noda and Greyson Junggren, DX quickly carved out a niche by giving engineering leaders clearer insight into what slows down their teams — without resorting to surveillance-heavy tools that often alienate developers. Since coming out of stealth in 2022, the Salt Lake City–based startup has tripled its customer base annually and now serves more than 350 enterprises, including GitHub and Adyen, while raising less than $5 million in outside capital.

For Atlassian, the deal signals a doubling down on its strategy to own the full developer workflow. Ninety percent of DX’s customers already use Atlassian’s collaboration tools, making the integration a natural extension. CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes pointed to AI adoption as a catalyst, with enterprises eager to understand if ballooning budgets are improving productivity or simply adding noise. By pairing DX’s qualitative and quantitative insights with Atlassian’s existing suite, the company is betting it can give organizations a tighter grip on efficiency at a moment when software development is being reshaped by new technologies.
