Alexis Ohanian, Co-Founder of Reddit, is developing a new social platform built around a single guiding principle: keep online spaces simple, safe, and respectful. He believes platforms don’t need sprawling codes of conduct if one rule can set the right tone for engagement. For Ohanian, clarity of purpose matters more than volume of policies, and he sees that clarity as the foundation of healthier digital communities.
The principle itself, as Ohanian put it, is blunt: “Don’t act like an asshole.” Years of seeing how quickly conversations can turn toxic informed this view, along with lessons from his immigrant mother that shaped his sense of fairness and accountability. “I’ve seen what happens when there are no guardrails,” he said, stressing the importance of creating online environments where people feel safe to share ideas without hostility.
Rather than complex moderation systems, Ohanian envisions a platform where one memorable rule is easier to follow and enforce. “We don’t need a thousand guidelines—just one that people can remember and live by,” he explained. He links this approach to his broader focus on inclusive innovation, including his investments in women’s sports, where he has pushed for systems that encourage equity and long-term sustainability.
