Navigating Shifting U.S. Consumer Spending Trends and Business Opportunities

Consumer confidence remained steady in early 2025, supported by low unemployment and stable inflation. However, spending patterns have shifted as consumers across different income groups have become more selective with their purchases. While discretionary spending has slowed in categories like apparel, electronics, and beauty products, spending on travel and home improvement has increased. Millennials have shown a greater willingness to splurge, particularly on vacations and luxury items, while baby boomers have been more cautious, likely adjusting their budgets after the holiday season. Businesses that rely on discretionary spending may find it helpful to refine their pricing strategies and promotional efforts to sustain demand. At the same time, more consumers have embraced trade-down behavior, with 75% choosing lower-cost alternatives in at least one category. Grocery shopping saw notable changes, as even high-income households shifted toward private-label and budget-friendly food brands.

Entrepreneurs in the food industry should consider expanding private-label offerings or introducing more competitively priced products to meet this demand. Despite cutbacks in certain areas, consumers still prioritized experiences, particularly travel. More Gen X and baby boomers planned vacations, following seasonal trends. Spending on restaurants and groceries remained strong, but rising food costs made these purchases feel less like splurges and more like necessities. Businesses in travel and hospitality should highlight value-driven options, while food brands may need to balance affordability with quality to retain customer loyalty. Adapting to these changing spending habits will be key for businesses looking to stay competitive. By focusing on value-driven offerings and understanding where consumers are still willing to spend, entrepreneurs can better navigate the developing market.
