McKinsey Experts Highlight The Importance of Spiritual Health for Holistic Well-being

Spiritual health is emerging as a crucial component of holistic well-being, according to insights from the McKinsey Health Institute (MHI). In a recent McKinsey Future of Asia Podcast, experts discussed findings from MHI’s global survey, revealing that spiritual health holds significant value across demographics, countries, and cultures. Jacqueline Brassey Senior Fellow at MHI, Kana Enomoto Director of Brain Health at MHI, and Atsushi Sorita Partner in Tokyo MHI, noted that spiritual health, which revolves around meaning, purpose, and connection to a greater whole, correlates with improvements in physical, mental, and social health. Notably, individuals who reported good spiritual health also demonstrated better overall well-being, with younger respondents prioritizing spiritual health more than older generations.

The discussion also emphasized regional differences in attitudes toward spiritual health, particularly in Asia. While 80% of respondents in Indonesia ranked spiritual health as highly important, only 45% of Japanese respondents shared the same view. McKinsey's experts underlined the need for greater awareness and integration of spiritual health into personal and professional life, as it can foster resilience, boost employee engagement, and reduce absenteeism in the workplace. Business leaders were encouraged to explore ways to promote spiritual well-being, both for their workforce and society at large.
